Milner Pass Trailhead Continental Divide Trail to Mount Ida

Milner Pass Trailhead: Continental Divide Trail to Mount Ida Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The summit of Mount Ida is accessed via a tundra trek that travels along the crest of the Continental Divide. Solitude is a guarantee here as are the promises of incredible scenery and the chance to see plenty of wildlife.

Once at the summit, there is an equal reward waiting with views of the alpine basin of the Gorge Lakes. Most of the hike is above tree line in open tundra. This is cause for advance planning; leave early and be willing to turn back if you spot developing storms."

This is a really nice but you will be exposed for most of it so the weather can be an issue. It wasn't for me because it was a perfectly clear but cold and somewhat windy day. It was 28F when I got started and about 45F when I got back. I did not find the trail to be too difficult except for a couple of boulder fields towards the end. Not so much because the trail is not well defined but simply because of the rocks. Also as you approach the top the most visible trail disappears. I was told by two hikers to follow a trail towards the right instead and that took me all the way to the top. It took me 2:40 to get to the top, I spent 30 min there and then it took me 2:20 to get back to my car.
