Joe Wright Reservoir

Joe Wright Reservoir Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Joe Wright Reservoir is a 160-acre impoundment just off of Highway 14, near Cameron Pass in the upper Poudre River watershed. Key Species: Arctic grayling, Emerald Lake rainbow trout. The bag limit for rainbow trout is two fish larger than 16 inches. Only hand-propelled or electric motorized boats are allowed. Only flies and lures may be used.

The arctic grayling have overrun the wild Emerald Lake rainbow trout in this impoundment and comprise about 85 percent of the fish population found there, with fish as large as 17 inches reported being caught. Basic attractor dry-fly patterns should be used when fish are hitting the surface. Flashy bead-head nymphs fished deep work well along the lake’s edge, which can be better accessed by a belly boat or canoe, except at the inlet of Joe Wright Creek, where the lake is shallow enough to wade. Small colorful lures fished deep are also extremely effective. These are not picky fish."
