North Table Mountain

North Table Mountain Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Short, powerful, physically intense. I’m either describing Glen Danzig or this North Table Mountain off-road outing.

Five hundred feet in a half-mile. That’s what happens to riders on this counterclockwise North Table Mountain loop, right out of the gate. The math on that is pretty fierce. The introductory slope hovers right around 20 percent, and rolling speed is unlikely to top 3 or 4 miles per hour. If you’re like many of those who find themselves on North Table, you haven’t had a real workout in quite some time, and you’re in for a harsh wake-up call. But that may be just Classic Jefferson county singletrack, as wide as a suburban sidewalk what you’re looking for. Tending toward bone-dryness in midwinter, North Table Mountain provides a wonderful landscape for blasting yourself out of an off-season slumber."

"North Table Mountain is a mesa formed by Paleocene basaltic lava flows about 60 million years ago. The more popular North Table Mountain and South Table Mountain, also a mesa, are separated by Clear Creek Canyon. Jefferson County Open Space has constructed a trail system to explore the mesa with expansive views of Golden and Denver from its top. North Table Mountain Park encompasses 1,998 acres, and a couple of areas are closed to the public, one of them a sensitive lichen area. Other seasonal closures protect cliff-nesting birds, mule deer, and other fragile or unique vegetation. The numerous mountain bikers we encountered were friendly and courteous, not at all a negative impact on the hiking experience. These trails are good for spring or fall days. Shade is scarce; on summer days it’s best to hike or bike early or late in the day to avoid the worst of the heat. Don’t forget your sunscreen, and take plenty of water." Read more

"This loop can be run either clockwise or counterclockwise; the counterclockwise direction is described here. From the parking lot, the trail follows the very steep dirt service road to the top of the mesa. This is the steepest part of the entire run, and it only lasts for 0.6 mile. Once on top of the mesa, the North Table loop turns right (south) and continues on the dirt service road past an old quarry and two climber access trails." Read more
