Swallow and Coyote Song Loop-South Valley Park

Swallow and Coyote Song Loop-South Valley Park Professional Review and Guide

"Cliffs of blushing Fountain Formation sandstone loom over this scenic loop. Swallows have built a neighborhood of nests in one cliff, and geese perch atop standing stones to survey the vistas.

Though the rock is part of the same uplifted Fountain Formation found in Red Rocks Park and Roxborough State Park, South Valley Park is distinct and unique. Here the red sandstone is more worn and weathered, rising in rounded spires from the meadow and scrubland on the backside of the hogback. Wildlife thrives in and among the rocks, from the swallows that nest in weathered pockets in a long vertical cliff face to the geese that play king of the mountain on small summits."
