Square Top Mountain Trail

Square Top Mountain Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Square Top Mountain, the big mountain to the west at Guanella Pass, missed being a Fourteener by a mere 206 feet. It is a pleasant and comfortable ascent, first on a flat old wagon road, then on a narrowing trail, and finally following rock cairns across a mostly grassy tundra.

If you are worried about the hardiness of your dog’s paws but still want his companionship while climbing a tall peak, this may be the climb. The entire hike is above timberline and you need to watch the weather carefully. Storms in this area are famous for their sudden appearance and their severity."

Great views because you are above the tree line for the entire hike. Fairly easy hike given the altitude. Nice place to eat lunch at the end of the trail before scrambling to the summit. Expect delays getting to the trailhead because of roadwork - as of 7-20-06.
