Upper Lake

Upper Lake Professional Review and Guide

"The basin containing Upper Lake looks like the glacier that carved it melted yesterday.

After circling the north shore of Stone Lake, the Roaring Fork Trail climbs a short way to end at a minor pond very close to Upper Lake. Above, rising in a dizzyingly huge bowl of the Continental Divide, the scene in August looks as though the most recent glacier melted yesterday. From a geologic perspective, it did.

Beyond the lake, there is no trail but also no barriers to following a stream along the steep flank of Hiamovi Mountain to a broad tundra meadow. A final steep walk to a less high point on the Divide, leads from Hell Canyon to a pass overlooking Paradise Park in Rocky Mountain National Park. The pass is some 810 feet higher than Upper Lake."
