Mount Chapin–Mount Chiquita–Ypsilon Mountain Traverse

Mount Chapin–Mount Chiquita–Ypsilon Mountain Traverse Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"These peaks are among the farthest north in Rocky Mountain National Park. Views from the high alpine tundra are top-notch on this peaceful, spacious hike. This threesome is very photogenic. Tourists have taken countless pictures of these mountains from the base of Old Fall River Road. Most of the hiking adventure takes place above timberline, offering expansive views of the Front Range, the Never Summer Range, and other Mummy Range peaks to the north. Moderate alpine terrain brings you to these friendly mountains.

The incredible perspective from the top of Ypsilon’s southeast couloir down to Spectacle Lakes alone is worth the trip. Every step of the way is chock-full of scenery that elevates your senses. If three summits aren’t enough, ambitious hikers can carry on to Fairchild Mountain. For those hoping to extend the day, there are several options to increase your peak count beyond this trio."

This trail gets steep very soon after it gets started and remains unforgiving because of the gain in altitude, the rock terrain or both. Having said that, it is a rather amazing trail because of the views it offers and the physical challenge. I did all three peaks and it took me about 3 h to reach Ypsilon. After a 30 min break I headed back down and it took and it took about two and a half hours. Beyond Chapin you basically have to follow your nose and a few cairns that are placed here and there because there is no real trail. It is also ver rocky. On the way back I took the trail from Chapin pass (marked with a large cairn) back to the trail head. Is less rocky
