Calypso Cascades, Ouzel Falls, & Ouzel Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Calypso Cascades and Ouzel Falls are popular, easy, short hikes in Wild Basin that feature the beauty of a cascading stream and can be enjoyed by adventurers of all ages and abilities. It is most dramatic during spring runoff but fun year-round.

Ouzel and Bluebird Lakes are moderate, almost all-day treks through almost every mountain climate zone. Ouzel is a pristine lake at the foot of Copeland Mountain, and higher Bluebird Lake affords a view of the Continental Divide."

"Constituting the southeast corner of Rocky Mountain National Park is an area known as Wild Basin. Whereas the broad and well-developed hiking trails here do not allude to the character this moniker implies, the tumbling and frothy nature of area streams certainly does. A short but memorable hike here leads to one of the more impressive aquatic descents, Calypso Cascades."

This is a very enjoyable hike. I went all the way to Ouzel Lake. Many people on the trail up to Ouzel Falls. After that not so much. The trail starts out wide, smooth and not much elevation gain the first 1.8 miles to Calypso Cascades. The 1 mile from here to Ouzel Falls is a little steeper but well worth it. Ouzel Falls is runnig full now and is quite impressive. After leaving Ouzel Falls the trail climbs a bit until reaching a ridge where the trail is smooth and flat with Longs Peak/ Mt Meeker looming on the left & Isolation Peak directly ahead. Ouzel Lake is pretty but nothing spectacular. Overall very enjoyable 9.5 miles hike.

Very much enjoyed this hike as it went along the river and provided a number of opportunities to climb out on rocks, experience great views, etc. Was fairly busy, but people were very polite and somewhat spread out, so not bad. Beautiful falls at the end! Highly recommended!

Good trail for a getting started hike or for a resting hike. More like a hike in the woods that the mountains but with beaurtiful rushing water streams, falls and flowers.

I went to Calypso Falls with my daughters, ages 8 and 10. The trail was easy enough for little kids, yet walking along the stream really kept their attention very well. The trail is well maintained and very popular so it felt safe for a woman alone with two children, but count on the lack of parking at the ranger station to add a few more steps to your trip.

Calypso Cascades is definitely a beautiful hike. The sounds of the cascades as you are making your way up the scenic trail adds to the total experience. Although it is rated as an "easy" hike, make sure you have been well aclimated to the altitude, if you are a regular inhabitant at sea level, as I am. Although I walk and run regularly. since I live in Michigan, and it was my first day hike in my short weekend visit to CO, I definetly felt the influence of the higher altitude in my lungs/chest. Never the less, the views are Colorado classic "breath-taking".
