"The Animas River begins in the Red Mountain mining district high in the San Juan Mountains and flows freely for about 60 miles to the Colorado–New Mexico border.

The Animas River through Durango is wide and deep and experiences tremendous runoff from May to July, so fishing is best in the spring, late summer, and fall.

Key Species: Brown trout, rainbow trout, Snake River cutthroat trout."
