Penitente Canyon

Penitente Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Since its discovery by rock climbers in 1985, Penitente Canyon has been visited by technical scramblers from as far away as Europe, Africa, and South America. Although relatively shallow, Penitente Canyon is enclosed by sheer cliff faces nearly 100 feet tall.

Other places, such as the area above the canyon’s rim to the west, feature unusual rock formations and outcrops. For hikers, a short and easy trail links both areas to create an interesting excursion."

Trail was in great shape, we walked rather than riding mountain bikes, but either way the trail was awesome. Remember, there is no water on the trail proper. When you arrive to the area, you will see signs for loops A, B, PC, etc. The one place that has water is when you first enter the Penitente Canyon Recreation Area.

If you are in to photos, this is an excellent area to get photographs of the San Luis Valley, the Sangre de Christo Mountains, and the surrounding area.

This is an EASY hike with beautiful scenery...I highly suggest it.
