The road seems very uneventful at first because the views are blocked by the trees. However, as you climb, views open up as you circle around a beautiful valley. The optional western loop climbs to a high point with 360-degree views. Mine shown on opposite page, bottom left, is not barricaded, but don’t be tempted to go inside. It is extremely dangerous. Trail follows narrow corridor of open forest land cut through the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. You’ll head due north for five miles, then have choice of two loops at the end. F.S. 584 is twisty, rough and fun to ride and suitable for all riders. However, the western loop is for experienced riders only. Stay on the established route at all times and under no circumstances enter the well-marked wilderness area. At the end of the eastern loop, a steep hiking trail goes into the wilderness to Ptarmigan Lake.
