North Platte River

North Platte River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"With headwaters along the east side of the Continental Divide bordering a vast basin known as North Park, the North Platte River meanders north through ranching country for 35 miles to the Wyoming border. Key Species: Brown trout, rainbow trout.

Big rainbows and browns hold in pools at the lower end of the river called Northgate Canyon, but many decent-size fish can be found throughout this Gold Medal stretch until it gets low in the fall. Silver Panther Martins have a reputation for being effective in the pools and during high water, as do orange and red Woolly Worm patterns. Deep-fish Prince nymphs or streamers such as the Platte River Special in the canyon pools during low water and match the mayfly and caddis fly hatches during higher water. Elk hair caddis are consistent performers."
