Michigan River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Michigan River begins in the Colorado State Forest in the Medicine Bow Range on the east rim of North Park and flows through lush hay meadows and pastures in North Park before joining the North Platte River 12 miles north of Walden.

This meandering off-color stream is classic brown trout water, holding some 4- to 5-pound fish, with the average in the 12- to 14-inch range. Work the pools against undercut banks with brightly colored spinners or streamers when the fish aren’t rising. When they are rising the most likely prey will be caddis flies, and the Elk Hair Caddis is a proven pattern during this hatch. When the water is high, the fish will be holding in slower water, so use big attractor nymphs like bead-head Pheasant Tails or Princes."
