St Mary's Falls

St. Mary's Falls Professional Review and Guide

"This ride starts with a mild ascent through pine, spruce, and aspen with Buffalo Creek in sight. In fact, many people ride just this stretch and return. Grunt out the steeps by St. Mary's Falls to ride through the tailings of an old mine. From here the ride is moderate.

The trail to Mount Baldy Road offers narrow singletrack and more glimpses of Colorado's mining past. St. Mary's does have a lot of unmarked side trails. No worries if a turn is missed, though, just more work. This is a fun out and back or a loop with Gold Camp Road or Jones's Downhill. Located North Cheyenne Canyon, west of Colorado Springs. Tread: 4.9 miles of singletrack and 2.4 miles of dirt road. Erosion has rutted the beginning of the dirt road and a downed tree crosses the upper singletrack."

Beautiful views of the city, lots of diversity in terrain and flora. This trail is better for hiking than mountain biking.

Excellent trail to ride on for all you downhill types! Very fast and furious coming down! Lots of loose gravel and make sure you hang on! Lots of switchbacks and sharp turns and you might biff and eat dirt! Wear a helmet and some gloves because first time out, you'll be glad you had them! I was glad I did! Watch out for the occasional runner and little kiddies on bikes coming up the trail as you descend. After you get down, you've got two options, take a nice little ride around the resevoir and take the chutes up or explore some easier single tracks around that area. Stop and enjoy the view too! It takes about 5-10min. to get down the Chutes and another 20-30min. to GET UP!!! Use a low gear and slowly but steadily, you'll get yourself back up to the top. Great trail to brush up and bike handling skills!
