Mueller State Park Medley

Mueller State Park Medley Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Though the views are pleasant enough, the trail system is confusing - there are many short, interlocking trails, all of which are identified with trail numbers rather than names. Accordingly, it is quite easy to become lost here.

Though much longer runs can be derived from the park's trail system, I have only included a short medley of trails that can be followed in a clockwise manner in order to avoid confusion. Bring a map when you run in this park! Also, portions of the park will be closed during June for elk calving, so call ahead to find out which trails are open. Grade: Easy, though there are a series of short hill climbs on loose gravel."

We hiked this recently on an early October morning and were all alone for the entire time. Perhaps for runners the trails may be confusing, but for walkers with a trail map there are no problems route finding. It was a chilly 23 degrees F when we set out about 8:15 am on a Saturday. Though the park was filled with trailers and RVs, the trails were quiet. It was sunny, and the aspens were in full colour. There was thin ice at the edges of the large ponds. There are a fair amount of hills to climb, and because the trail system uses old roads, the grades can be quite steep. Halfway through the hike there is a bench to rest on at a trail intersection. Forests, meadows, ponds and views to distant mountains in the southwest are highlights of this highly recommended walk, a great introduction to the park. With an oversize map in hand from the toll booth, it is easy to make up longer or shorter loop hikes. The park has a lovely visitor center.
