Manitou Incline

Manitou Incline Professional Review and Guide

"This hike heads directly up a historic incline railway in Manitou Springs—a route so ridiculous that it has become world-famous. To say this is a busy hike doesn’t really do it justice. More like a communal hike. As if there was some kind of extravagantly hatted holy man with a healing touch or free smoothie coupons waiting at the top of the mountain.

There were easily hundreds of other people struggling with me on the Incline (and struggling to find parking beforehand). Of course, I had to try it for the first time on Labor Day, maybe the busiest day of the year. I’m sure it’s not so packed most days. Anyway, I was shocked at how many people were up here, Labor Day or not."

This hike is definitely more difficult than it appears! Honestly, I underestimated how much tougher it would be on my breathing than on my legs. Since I have spent most of my life closer to sea level I experienced a lot of shortness of breath. This trail is well worth the effort, though, because the views are spectacular and they just improve the more you push yourself up, whether you take it slow and steady or your lungs are strong enough to make a faster trek. If you love a cardio workout, you will love this hike -- it's seriously challenging. There are some portions that require some scrambling, and I can see how hiking poles would be really helpful for the descent. If you are looking to save your knees and not struggle with stairs, you might take the Barr trail back down the mountain. This is a very popular, crowded hike, so expect to see a lot of people also struggling up the steep trail. At the end of the day it felt like a mentally and physically taxing pilgrimage, which gave me a thrilling rush once I realized what I had accomplished. Do this and be prepared for a breathtaking experience!
