Galena Peak

Galena Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"An off-trail ridge-top climb to a high peak, this is not a maintained trail and is not recognized by the forest service. The route is fairly short, but the ridge above the tree line is exposed to wind and weather. The hike all the way to Mount Otto should be done early in the day to avoid inclement weather.

From Hayden Pass, hike north along a closed road that quickly becomes a trail through aspens and fir. The trail winds up to an open shoulder with views over the San Luis Valley and south along the crest of the range. Climb along the left of the rocky and exposed ridge up to Point 11,870. Continue north along the ridge on easier grassy slopes to the summit of Galena Peak. For a shorter hike (3.6 miles), turn around here and retrace the route to Hayden Pass."
