Mount Sopris Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"There are a number of landmarks that act as gateways to certain geographical locations throughout the United States. The St. Louis Arch is known to most as the “Gateway of the West.” Estes Park is considered the “Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park” and Ridgway the “Gateway to the San Juans.”

While it’s never really been officially acknowledged as such, Mount Sopris, standing tall outside Carbondale, Colorado, could very well be considered the “Gateway to the Elk Range.” Not many singular peaks in the state can boast the amount of vertical rise and dominant presence as Mount Sopris. Driving south on CO 82, the peak appears to be a fourteener at first glance."
