Upper Arkansas River

Upper Arkansas River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Below Leadville the river meanders through willow- and brush-lined banks in the wide valley near Granite, then plunges through a series of canyons that begins below its confluence with Clear Creek and ends at the Stone Bridge access about 5 miles upstream from Salida.

A new public-access stretch below Leadville offers anglers the chance to get into some underutilized brown trout water as the weather warms and runoff declines. The Hayden Ranch access, which begins about 8 miles south of Leadville on the east side of U.S. Highway 24 and continues south for 5.5 miles to just north of the outflow from Twin Lakes Reservoir, is benefiting from Superfund cleanup of mines around Leadville. The improved water quality has allowed the browns in the upper river to increase their size and density in recent years. Some anglers report catching fish in the 18- to 20-inch range, with knowledge of brown trout habits crucial to success. Hatches here are lighter and later in the year than in the lower river but still should be taken advantage of."
