Lower Mohawk Lake

Lower Mohawk Lake Professional Review and Guide

"As beautiful as they come, Mohawk Lakes, both lower and upper, are popular destinations. Stunning scenery, sheer-walled falls, soaring peaks, perfectly set lakes and a “century” trail make for a wonderful hike. Over 100 species on the Mohawk Lake Trail offer wildflower lovers a trek of superb wildflowers.

This trail description begins at the upper trailhead reached via a rough, rocky road with a couple of boulder obstacles, making the use of a high clearance vehicle advisable. Wildflower Alert: Fabulous flowers lead to spirit-lifting waterfalls and lakes on this delightful trail."

A little difficult to find the correct road from Highway 9 to the trailhead. Fairly rocky and bumpy road to upper trailhead (Wouldn't recommend for low clearance vehicles). First stretch of trail was quite steep, but don't get discouraged! The rest of the trail to Lower Mohawk Lake wasn't too, difficult, although it can be a challenge at times to find the trail. Continental Falls was impressive, and there were wildflowers everywhere! Lower Mohawk Lake is beautiful - nestled in the trees just below timberline. The trail was more crowded than most I've been on at this elevation, being only a few miles from Breckenfirdge, but well worth seeing, especially with the wildflowers in bloom.

If not for the rain and drizzle it would of been best! We made it to the middle lake before getting too cold and wet. Trail is great lots to see with cabins and mines and gushing falls! Highly recommend it especially if you can get a sunny day!

Great hike! There are so many alternatives to get to the lakes and to see the waterfall. There is plenty of old mining lodging along the way as well. It is worth driving as far back as your car will allow you, the walk from the first parking lot is uneventful.

We went during the 4th of july weekend, so it was very busy. There are two trail heads, one by 4x4, the other by 2 wheel drive. It was a fun hike, steep in areas but not reaaly a leg burner untill you get to the top. Going to the very top of the trail is well worth it, you pass 3 lakes and climb to the top of a dramatic waterfall.
