Iowa Hill Professional Review and Guide

"The Iowa Hill Hydraulic Placer Mine is explored along this historical interpretive trail. The hike takes you back over 125 years in history to the days when miners panned for gold then developed techniques using water cannons, called hydraulic giants or monitors, to wash the dirt on the sides of gulches into sluice boxes to capture gold particles.

Mining History News rates this trail as having “one of the best hydraulic mining exhibits in the world.” The restored two-story log Miners’ Boarding House on the trail can be toured with a guide."

The Iowa Hill interpretive displays were created by following old pictures and knowledge of how the miners first panned for gold in streams and then evolved hydraulic techniques to remove gold from the hills."

"This is a short but sweet little history tour of a hydraulic placer mining operation near Breckenridge. History buffs will get a kick out of the curated exhibits on this micro-adventure, but hiking enthusiasts might fail to get their ya-ya’s out satisfactorily, and nature lovers will be even more disappointed in the human race than they were before.

Sheer volume. That’s what hydraulic placer mining was all about. They destroyed the mountain in order to get at some specks of sparkly metal buried in the dirt. And they got rich doing it. This pressure-blasted canyon has become an outdoor museum of sorts, for those with a minimum of strength to get up the hill. The route is fairly well manicured and
straightforward. There are several spurs to “exhibits” off the main trail."
