Heil Valley Ranch–Picture Rock Professional Review and Guide
"Use Heil Valley Ranch to access the Picture Rock Trail, one of the Front Range’s coolest singletracks. This challenging route rewards both power and handling skill.
This ride, a top favorite of Boulder locals, is very much a two-tone trail ride. That is, the ride consists of two distinctly dier ff ent types of trail. First you’ll ride through Heil Valley Ranch, on wide trails packed with small- and medium-size rocks fixed into the dirt. These trails aren’t really “technical” in the normal sense of the word, but they are relentlessly rocky and rough. Then Phase Two: the Picture Rock Trail, a much-loved singletrack tucked behind the hogback.
When it’s all said and done, the natural climber will probably enjoy this out-and-back route more than the MX-inspired and downhill-inclined, but there’s plenty along the way for everybody. I think we can say this much, however: This is not a great ride for beginners who haven’t learned the basics of piloting a two-wheeled machine on a very bumpy surface. There’s real mountain biking involved here, although nothing remotely extreme."
