Boulder Mount Sanitas

Boulder: Mount Sanitas Professional Review and Guide

"Mount Sanitas is a bolder Boulder hike, and access to its challenge is right in town. This hike is an obstacle course of boulders, log and rock steps, steep slabs, and rugged terrain.

This is a hike not to be taken lightly, and it is less of a trail and more of a 45-degree free-climb up the side of the mountain. For a good portion of the ascent, the Sanitas Loop has hikers scrambling over boulders and up the side of the sharp sandstone ridges. Mount Sanitas is popular with trail runners, dog lovers, and locals."

I went here because it was a new trail for me and a relatively short drive from home. It is a gradual climb for the first half - entirely up the Wapiti Trail (2.5 miles one way) and certainly nothing too difficult. The Ponderosa Loop (2.6 miles) is very pleasant and well worth tacking on as you walk through the woods with glimpses of both the prairies and Longs Peak. There's also a beautiful observation point with benches where you can look out over the valley and at the mountain which makes an excellent spot for lunch. One major downside: this is a very popular trail for mountain bikes, more of them than there are hikers. The constant moving over to the side to make way for them does get a bit old over time. I'm not sure I would go again just for this reason.
