North Maroon Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The North Face of North Maroon exhibits the spirit of Colorado ski mountaineering and has long been considered Aspen’s extreme-skiing “testpiece.” Any ski mountaineer seeking to take things to the next level may do so by taking a stab at this line, which is exactly what a young ski mountaineer by the name of Fritz Stammberger did some forty years ago. At that time few locals even considered the face to be skiable, but on a sunny June day in 1971, Stammberger climbed the face, clipped into his retro planks, and ripped down the route, cutting in and out of narrow gullies and traversing above cliff bands all the way to the apron below.

This was the first descent of the face and marked a pivotal moment in Colorado ski history. Nowadays this face gets skied by locals often, but the sense of adventure surrounding the face still remains very real. If you want to share in a piece of Colorado ski lore and put your skills to the test on a serious line, consider tempting your fate on the North Face of North Maroon."
