Wilson Mesa Loop Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"With the grandeur of Wilson Peak, rushing rivers and waterfalls, and a carnival of diverse wildflowers, this trail provides a wonderfully colorful day trip. Just southwest of Telluride, this is yet another breathtaking hike to add to the area’s repertoire already rife with outdoor treasures.

Wilson Peak looms close by, and dazzling waterfalls and gushing creeks soothe our senses for much of the way. The hike takes us through pine and aspen forests, past Wilson Peak, over a pleasant creek to the remains of an old mine and its shaft and railway, before winding through absurdly beautiful meadows of flowers."

Nice little hike, very few people on the trail. Wild flowers were amazing.

We did this hike on our first day in the area to ease into the altitude. The sites are weighted to the beginning of the loop and they are really fantastic. It is a very easy start, making a great warm up. By the time you cross the creek and start descending your muscles are ready. The descent is very easy with only a couple short, steep sections. The climb after was in pretty well distributed bursts with short level areas to relax. The biggest issue we had were the copious flies and mosquitos. I'm rather comfortable with flies, but, ugh, there were a lot. It made stopping to enjoy the views a little harder. We were able to drive up in a basic rental with regular clearance. We had to drive carefully near the end. I recommend this as an easy, beautiful and fast hike.
