Ponderosa Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"Alderfer / Three Sisters is an out-of-the-way gem of a mountain park. The trees are responsible for the marvelous feel of Alderfer- the pines are far enough apart to allow generous sunlight onto the woodland floor, yet close enough to impart a sheltered, protected feel. The Three Sisters, jumbled rock formations that give the park its name, jut above the vanilla-scented ponderosa."

I enjoyed this hike, it had some good elevation changes and wasn't overly difficult. I came here with my girlfriend and our small dog, and we saw lots of other pups on the trail. Great mixed rolling hills, short steep climbs and pretty views. Lots of trail markers to keep you on path with many options to tack on more mileage easily. We took the Sisters Trail to Ponderosa to the Brother Lookout and back to the parking lot via Ponderosa. The lookout had an awesome view, and it is only an extra 0.2 miles so I definitely think it was worth it. We saw a few deer on the trail as well as hanging out near the parking lot. There are so many trails here, I would come back often if I was a local. There are plenty of trails to choose from as well as various levels of difficulty. There is a well-maintained restroom at the trailhead, and I love that dogs are allowed (on a leash). There are a number of mountain bikers on the route but they were not overwhelming. Everyone is really nice and courteous, as well. I think if you're looking for something not too strenuous and not too far from Denver then this is a really lovely hike. Get here early! The parking lot fills up fast.
