Big Falls

Big Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Hike to a view of Southern California’s tallest waterfall. The Forest Service does not recommend traveling beyond the overlook, although there is a use trail that clambers over boulders through the canyon to the base of the lower falls. Hikers going farther should use caution."

"Falls Creek churns and somersaults from high on the shoulders of San Bernardino Peak Divide into a narrow hanging valley, then plunges headlong into the canyon of Mill Creek. The place where it makes this ?nal drop is known as Big Falls. Author and naturalist Charles Francis Saunders described it best: “Looking upward, you see the little creek, a couple of hundred feet above, leap out of a patch of blue sky and drop by a succession of precipitous pitches down a narrow, shadowy gorge, to be shattered at the bottom into a series of musical cascades.” Waterfalls are infrequent in the San Bernardinos; it seems a slight upon the beauty of this one that it should have been given no more fanciful name than Big Falls. These spectacular falls are but a short walk from the road. Visit them in springtime, when the melting mountain snowpack is ?lling Falls Creek, and canyonsides are aroar with the thunder of plunging waters. Bring sandals and a swimsuit." Read more

"Mill Creek cuts a deep swath through the loose rocks south of San Gorgonio Mtn. There are numerous waterfalls along the lateral streams pouring down the steep faces into Mill Creek. Falls Creek has the most impressive waterfall, uncreatively named Big Falls. It is hidden behind the mouth of the canyon, but can be viewed from this short hike." Read more
