Vogelsang High Sierra Camp

Vogelsang High Sierra Camp Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This overnight loop to the highest of the High Sierra Camps may be hiked in either direction, approaching Vogelsang from the west via Rafferty Creek, or from the east via the Lyell Fork and Evelyn Lake. If you have only one night to spend, you can make an out-and-back hike of 13.4 miles via Rafferty Creek, but this area really deserves more time, at least three days. It will be described here in a clockwise direction, that is, via Lyell Fork, returning via Rafferty Creek, because the ascent is more gradual."

"Vogelsang Camp has the most dramatic setting of all the famous High Sierra Camps. Located right under the somber north face of Fletcher Peak, it offers eagle views of valleys, granite domes, and lakes below. Many nearby lakes offer exciting side trips for anglers, swimmers, and picnickers, and Fletcher Peak, a Class 2 scramble, invites climbers."

"At about 10,130 feet, subalpine Vogelsang is the highest of the park’s High Sierra Camps. At such a high elevation, nights and mornings can be brisk. A plus of high elevation is that you are treated to very starry nights, especially around the time of a new moon, when a section of our Milky Way galaxy is visible streaming across the sky. While a few lucky people win lottery spots for the pricey High Sierra Camp (see “Camping and Lodging,” page 20), most folks camp overnight at one of the nearby lakes. All summer, the camping quota fills quickly, so plan ahead and reserve your permit months in advance or be prepared to wait in line for first-come, firstserved permits the day before your trip."
