Jack Main Canyon and Tilden Lake

Yosemite, California

Jack Main Canyon and Tilden Lake Professional Review and Guide

"This multiday loop hike has been included in the Hetch Hetchy section because it begins and ends there, but part of it extends into the remote north boundary country. Spring runoff in early season makes some sections of trail nearly impassible and many creek crossings extremely dangerous. On the other hand, if you wait too long, the beginning and end of the trip at the low elevations around Hetch Hetchy Reservoir can be hot and dry. Still, if the conditions are right, it’s a great hike, with solitude guaranteed. Just be sure to check with the park service about trail conditions before setting out."

We hiked in from Saddlebag Lake. Total milage is 5 miles, but some of it is scaling up some pretty tough boulders. Took us about 5-6 hours to complete. The view on the ridge above Upper McCabe is magnificent. Not a desolate as we thought. Several day packers and a backpacker couple came through during the two days we were there.
