Chain Lakes

Chain Lakes Professional Review and Guide

"This is a perfect weekend hike into the classic glacial scenery that is the hallmark of Yosemite. The route takes you up a glacial moraine, then along a series of lakes gouged out by the flow of ice, over rock that displays fine examples of glacial polish and striations. There are wildflowers in profusion and trout in the lakes. This corner of the park is less well known because it’s off the beaten path, and the drive to the trailhead is longer than most, but it’s well worth your time. A possible bonus is that you might have better luck getting a permit to enter the park here than at some of the more familiar trailheads."

"The remote southwest corner of Yosemite National Park is the location of the three superb subalpine lakes that compose the Chain Lakes group. Although quite isolated, these lakes are not the place to look for solitude; they are much too pretty."

Started the 50 mi trip from Glacier Pt and trecked to Merced Lake and Red Devil Lake over Red Peak Pass to the Ottoway Lakes and back to Clacier Pt. The trip took 4.5 days of hard hiking. Next time I would stretch it out an extra day. The trip was far beyond my wildest dreams. Great Mt views and wildlife. (mainly deer). Mosquitos were every where. Take insect repellant w/ 99% deet and a mosquito net for your head during the spring and summer months. This early in the year the south side of the pass was covered in sun cupped snow which made for an interesting ascent. recommend snowshoes or crampons for this time frame. Afternoon storms pop up around 3pm. This was the best and hardest hike I've ever accomplished and well worth the effort.
