West Valley Floor

West Valley Floor Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is a longer hike, but there is little elevation change. Start early, take a picnic, and make a day of it. Along the way are opportunities for swimming or wading, good places to watch the climbers on the face of El Capitan (especially with binoculars), and fine views of several famous waterfalls in spring and early summer.

The falls are mostly dry by mid-August. The valley floor can get hot in summer, but most of the trail is in the shade."

"This end of Yosemite Valley is surprisingly quiet and unvisited, except near popular attractions like Bridalveil Fall and El Capitan Meadow. If you start fairly early in the morning though, you can have even these busy spots to yourself. Dogwoods and maples are especially beautiful at this end of the valley, blooming and fragrant in spring, blazing with color in fall. The beaches along the Merced River invite sunning and swimming in summer."
