Purisima Whittemore Gulch Out-and-Back

Purisima: Whittemore Gulch Out-and-Back Professional Review and Guide

"Starting from the ridge overlooking Half Moon Bay, this ride takes you down the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Smooth singletrack begins in the moss-draped forest of tan oak, madrone, and Douglas fir. Spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean open up as the trail switchbacks down the brush-covered hillside before quickly dropping into a moist redwood forest. Riding this as an out-and-back maximizes the singletrack, but there are other ways to climb out of Purisima Creek Canyon—not all of them pleasant. Trail surface: 23 percent dirt road and 77 percent singletrack."

Great mountain biking trail. Begins with singletrack downhill, through redwoods and down into a valley. As you begin the ascent you are on a dirt path, and the gradual climb is strenuous. Prepare to sweat a lot, but overall not too difficult. Highly recommended.
