Big Meadow and Round Lake Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Cradled under the imposing cliffs of the volcanic Dardanelles, snow-clad Round Lake is pure and rapturous in winter. It’s a prime destination after snowshoeing through an expansive meadow where the Steller’s jay squawks, then trudging through a forest where the great horned owl perches sneakily. As an added bonus, you get to scan the Upper Truckee River drainage on this remote route sometimes shared by cross-country skiers and dogs. Pay close attention to the route just past the meadow to ensure you’re headed in the direction of fittingly named Round Lake. It’s best to go several days after a snowfall, with the hope someone has already set tracks to follow. Meiss Lake is a mere 1.2 miles south of Round Lake, and an ultimate 8-mile, one-way trip can be arranged with a car shuttle (Route 23)."
