Sunset Trail Loop

Sunset Trail Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The loop follows several trails and one forest road to connect some of the best scenery and hiking in the Grant Grove region. While part of the trail is very popular—the General Grant Loop is the most frequented trail in this section of the park— most of it is only lightly traveled. Sequoia and Kings Canyon are not known for waterfalls, but this hike passes two quaint and secluded cascades. Wildflowers such as azalea and tiger lilies abound. The trail also winds through one of the most beautiful sequoia groves the park has to offer."

"This hike first follows a fire road, closed to private vehicles, through a quiet, less-traveled area of the park, then visits pretty Ella Falls, climbs to Grant Grove Village, and returns to the General Grant Tree parking area." Read more

"Waterfalls, vistas, and Big Trees are the chief attractions along this loop through the west fringe of Grant Grove. While busloads of tourists rub elbows with one another on the ever popular General Grant Tree Trail, hikers can revel in the relative quiet and solitude found nearby on the Sunset Trail. Late spring and early summer are the times to see Viola and Ella Falls, when snowmelt has swelled Sequoia Creek." Read more

"Waterfalls, vistas, and big trees are the prime attractions for this trip through a section of Grant Grove, an area with far fewer visitors than around General Grant Tree. Ella and Viola Falls put on a showy display in late spring and early summer, when Sequoia Creek is running high from snowmelt. Added treats include an overlook offering a grand view of Sequoia Lake and, of course, the opportunity to see some notable giant sequoias." Read more

This trail has much to offer; beautiful wildflowers, waterfalls, & sequoias. The side trip to Viola Falls & the Dead Giant loop are worth it. You'll encounter few other hikers on the loop. Take time to wander through the General Grant Grove & enjoy people-watching. Watch my video
