Even though Redwood Mountain holds the largest intact grove of giant sequoias, tourist traffic is fairly light, enabling hikers to enjoy the Big Trees without much company. This trip, which follows the west loop through the grove, lacks the number of noteworthy individual trees of the east loop described in Trip 59 (page 205). However, it has plenty of stately trees along with an interesting work in progress—a hillside covered with Christmas tree–size young sequoias on the site of an old burn. Biologists have learned a great deal about the relationship between sequoias and fire through experimental burns performed in research areas within the Redwood Mountain Grove.
