New River and Slide Creek to Historic Mining District and Eagle Creek Professional Review and Guide
"Seeing another soul on the greater New River and Slide Creek route, one of the more remote trails in the western Trinity Alps, is highly unlikely. Old mining towns and related sites abound in the Historic Mining District, including Old Denny, where, around the turn of the 20th century, 500 residents once lived and worked. Nowadays, the old town site may not see that many visitors in a hundred-year span. Rich with history, other town sites, such as Marysville and White Rock City, invite explorers to discover the treasures of the past. While most of the Alps mining was hydraulic or placer, this route passes near the Sherwood and Hunter mines, two of the area’s very few examples of hard-rock mining. The more modern-day “agricultural miners” who grew illegal crops of marijuana in this area in the 1970s and ’80s have been rooted out. During the pot-growing heyday, recreational enthusiasts entering this part of the wilderness were placing their safety and even their lives in jeopardy. If you happen to see any suspicious activity in this area, please report it to the Big Bar Ranger Station."
