Big Tree Loop Professional Review and Guide

"The short Big Tree Loop is one of the main highlights for summer visitors to Humboldt Redwoods State Park, when a seasonal footbridge allows easy access across Bull Creek to a stand of impressive old-growth redwoods. The most notable tree, the Giant holds the distinction of being the National Champion Redwood, awarded based upon a number of factors, including diameter, height, and crown spread. Additionally, visitors can gain a better perspective on just how massive a mature redwood can be while viewing the Flatiron Tree, a huge downed redwood sprawling across the forest floor. Away from these popular tourist attractions, the loop travels through a cathedral-like forest containing many fine redwood specimens. The picnic area at the trailhead offers the opportunity for lunch following the short and easy hike."

The seasonal bridge allowing straightforward access to the Big Tree Loop is only in place during summer, usually from late May to the end of September. In the fall, when the water level is low, you can easily ford Bull Creek and have the area mostly to yourself.
