Smith and Morris Lakes Professional Review and Guide

"If there were a queen of the Trinity Alps, her throne would be somewhere in the vicinity of Smith Lake. Perched on a majestic bench below Sawtooth Mountain, in the granite heart of the Alps, the lake and its awesome cirque have natural wonders like a queen has jewels: a misty waterfall pours over a cliff at the inlet; the sun rises over the awesome drop of Stuart Fork; the jagged profile of Sawtooth towers overhead. Seat yourself on a slab of gray granite near the lake’s outlet, and you’ll feel like royalty indeed. Highlights: A tough off-trail hike that amply rewards the effort. Smith Lake is a gem."

My friend and I started this trip by leaving stuart fork trail head at about 1 pm and we went to alpine lake for the night. The next day we hunted for the "trail" to smith and it took awhile to find it. The current break in the brush was just east of the outlet creek from alpine lake. We exited from smith lake down bear gulch and I don't recommend that it was incredibly strenuous and dangerous as we could only make it down following the creek everything else was overgrown. Great fishing at alpine, smith, and morris lakes. You need to be in great shape this hike has the potential to push you to your limit!

TOP OF THE LINE! BRUTAL BUT GOD'S BEST DEPICTION OF WHAT HE HAS CREATEd FOR THOSE WHO PHYSICALLY CAN ENDURE THE CHALLENGE. BEEN TO 38 LAKES IN THE TRINITY ALPS, AND SMITH LAKE IS KING OF KINGS. MYSTIC AND FULL OF NATURAL BEAUTY.

The trail is hard to find and not well marked at all. Once on the trail, your in for a tough hike through granite. Once you reach the ridge, you can see for miles and miles. Amazing view! Then you must hike down and find a trail that is not well marked. You can't go to high or too low or else your in for a tough hike! Once you reach he lake, its beautiful! A waterfall flowing into a huge crystal blue lake. One of the toughest but best experiences ever!
