Long Canyon

Weaverville, California

Long Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"Fortunately, Long Canyon is prettier than it is long—otherwise the hike up this steep-sided gorge might seem long indeed. As it is, a stunning array of summer wildflowers, lush meadows, and breathtaking views can make the uphill haul seem entirely too short. If it’s wildflowers you’re after, late July is your best bet for hitting Long Canyon at its peak. Highlights: A steep hike up a canyon that boasts one of the best summer wildflower shows in the Alps; the most direct route to the Four Lakes Loop, a popular trail that circles Siligo Peak and its four scenic lakes."

Great trail!! It's a bit of work going up the canyon, but worth every bit. We saw so many hummingbirds in the meadows it was great! Views are excellent, really cool forest.

The trail up to the canyon looks down on a creek lined with deciduous trees, maples i think, so even if you miss the summer flowers you will see the autumn colors. Long canyon itself is near perfect. There is a wonderful camp spot at the east end of the canyon, and the meadow terrace 3/4 of the way up is great, looks like a zen garden with perfectly placed boulders. The geology is amazing with the contrast in mountains from south to north. This is an amazing valley!
