Mt Diablo State Park Back Canyon Trail

Mt. Diablo State Park: Back Canyon Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This loop, combining parts of the Donner Creek, Back Creek, and Meridian Point trails, and Back Creek, Meridian Ridge, and Donner Canyon roads, offers a wonderful sample of the joys the north side of Mt. Diablo has to offer. Cool, shady canyons, exposed rocky ridges, chaparral-covered hillsides, and oak woodlands compete for your attention with a terrific assortment of trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and birds. In spring, consider extending your trip to visit a set of hidden waterfalls by following the Middle and Falls trails as described in “Falls Trail,” elsewhere in this book. The Back Canyon Trail and the lower part of Donner Canyon Road may be very muddy in wet weather."

I hike this trail regularly, going as far as the Meridian Ridge fork. I wrecked my foot a couple of years ago and need to stay off the steep, rocky, shaley single track trails, so I don't go all the way up to Murchio Gap. The Back Creek trail is a gradual climb, following the creek up a canyon lined with rock outcroppings, dense chapparel, digger pine. It's a beautiful walk. I turn around at the Meridian Ridge fork and backtrack to the Tickwood trail which traverses the hill about 2/3 mile over to Cardinet Oaks Rd where you can either go on up to the summit or head back downhill to the Regency gate. It's about a 5.5 mile hike.
