Huckleberry Meadow - Alta Trail Loop

Huckleberry Meadow - Alta Trail Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This loop hike begins on the Hazelwood Nature Trail and circles through giant sequoia groves to the grassy wildflower-covered Huckleberry Meadow. At the meadow is Squatter’s Cabin, an 1880s one-room log cabin. The cabin was abandoned when the settler filed a land claim and discovered the land was already owned by Hale Tharp."

"This pleasant loop sees little traffic, sandwiched between two of the Giant Forest’s more popular trails, Crescent Meadow Trail on the south and Congress Trail to the north. The route samples three delightful meadows, Huckleberry, Circle, and Crescent, and several of the most prominent giant sequoias, including the Washington Tree, the world’s second largest. A log cabin built in the 1880s and bedrock mortars at the site of a Native American village provide some historical interest. Options abound for extending the trip beyond the 3.75 miles described below."

"If you are hoping to see a bear, this loop should give you plenty of opportunities. The historic Squatter’s Cabin, Huckleberry Meadow, and the Washington Tree are also along this route. Begin by following the covered stairs leading down to the crosswalk to reach the Giant Forest Museum. Cross the Generals Highway and head toward the museum.

Follow the paved walkway in front of the museum to its end and arrive at the Alta Trail. As you travel through the forest at 0.2 mile, you pass the Bear Hill Trail and continue straight.
At 0.4 mile you reach the Hazelwood Nature Trail and make a right (east), passing interpretive signs along the way."
