"Sandstone Peak is the quintessential destination for peak baggers in the Santa Monica Mountains. The 3,111-foot summit can be efficiently climbed from the east via the Backbone Trail in a mere 1.5 miles, but the far more scenic way to go is the loop outlined below. Take a picnic lunch, and plan to make a half day of it. Try to come on a crystalline day in late fall or winter to get the best skyline views." Read more

"Perhaps the single best day hike in Southern California, this loop to the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains offers a little bit of everything that makes hiking here great: coastal views, spring blooms, shaded canyons, sunny slopes, and easy scrambling. On clear days, hikers have commanding vistas stretching from Ventura and the Channel Islands past the Palos Verdes Peninsula and sometimes even to the San Gabriels. An absolute must-do." Read more

A great 1/2 day hike with incredible views at both Inspirational Point and Sandstone Peak Point; the views alone are worth the effort! Take water, lunch, and warm clothes to keep you warm when you get to the top!

A very pleasant amble through a meadow of waving grasses and scented flowers brought us to the rim of the abandoned reservoir, where we could sit and gaze at the Pacific Ocean in all its quiet majesty. We greatly enjoyed the rapid changes of scenery from wildland to botanical garden-like zen forestry with a small workout for the calves and thighs. No rain, but a hint of fog creeping up the hillsides in the later evening to round out a wonderful afternoon in the most pleasant surroundings, with a little history and wildlife appreciation thrown in for good measure!

I hike often so I am very picky with my trails. This particular one is mediocre... distance is perfect for those who want to spend a short afternoon on the trail. scenery is beautiful and the grade is respectable throughout. the only negative to this trail is that it was very popular on this saturday afternoon that i went. we couldnt walk 5 minutes without running into another party of hikers.

This hike was a blast! It is a great 1/2 day hike, but there is a lot to see and do that could extend it to an all day event. Once at the hiking area, the weather is wonderful even if the fog from there ocean hasn't burned off. The hike itself isn't overcrowded, and we went on MLK Day, a national holiday. The trail itself is not too paved, but easy to follow. It is enjoyable for begining, moderate and advanced hikers as it offeres a combination of uphill hiking and moderate to rugged terrain. It included great views overlooking the coast, and actual climbing routes for those who are intersted. It is a loop hike, so it stays interesting the whole way through. On the hike you can see the phenomenon of balancing rock, and you will come across inspiration piont. If you are wondering what these are, go find out. The hike is beautiful.
