Keys View to Inspiration Peak

Keys View to Inspiration Peak Professional Review and Guide

"This short but rewarding hike leads you away from the crowds that gather at Keys View to a quiet peak in the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Inspiring vistas stretch from the Salton Sea in the south, past the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains, and across the vast empty reaches of the Mojave Desert. Anyone who has ever been to Keys View, on the crest of the Little San Bernardino Mountains, knows how dramatic the aerial-like vista is. If you don’t mind doing a little walking, you can enjoy a vista equally as grand from Inspiration Peak, only a short distance northwest of Keys View, and you will likely have the peak to yourself. Choose a clear day for the hike from autumn through spring, since smog often obscures the view. Mornings are best—the smog usually thickens by afternoon."

"This short nature trail features interesting monzogranite rock formations, which attract rock climbers as well as casual strollers. The trail is paved and barrier-free. Cap Rock is nearly at the hub of the loop."

"This clear, paved, barrier-free path to Keys View Loop is the highest trail in the park accessible by a paved road. You can count on a brisk breeze, so bring your windbreaker. The viewpoint is on the crest of the Little San Bernardino Mountains. As such, it provides an expansive view of the Coachella Valley and the San Bernardino Range to the west. Unfortunately, the view is all too often obscured by pollution from the Los Angeles Basin. Information boards contrasting smog levels give the viewer a good idea of how air pollution affects visibility at differing distances. The smog also endangers the biological integrity of the park itself. At the lookout there is no diagrammatic map of the park or explanation of the area's geology, a situation often creating questions from visitors to Keys View. Either schedule this trip for late in your stay at Joshua Tree so you will be familiar with the park's landmarks, or bring your park map with you. Road and loop trail on a peak in Little San Bernardino Mountains provides easy access to panoramic view, with additional side trip to Inspiration Peak."

We were lucky enough to have a clear day, so the view was spectacular--we could see the Salton Sea and on into Mexico. However, this isn't really a trail. So, if you're looking for a hike, this isn't.

extremely depressing as you can only see smog blocking your view of the Salton Sea, unless there's a strong wind. sad.
