See beautiful Joshua Tree National Park then exit the park on an interesting four-wheel-drive road. Ask at visitor center for the Geology Tour Road Guide that describes, in detail, the first part of this route. Stay on designated roads at all times. Street-legal vehicles only. Only the last part through Berdoo Canyon is moderate. Flash floods can quickly increase difficulty. Check at the visitor center for latest conditions. Suitable for stock, high-clearance, 4x4 SUVs.

I go up this canyon all the time in my Manx dune buggy with stock height and suspension. Awesome canyon especially in the spring. Much more enjoyable if you air down your tires no matter what you drive.

Look out for locals using the lower section of the trail as a gun range. Plenty of areas to stop and have lunch. High clearance 4WD needed in only one section of dry waterfall.

WE DROVE THIS TRAIL IN MY 2003 TOYOTA TACOMA 4WD, ITS STOCK AND I HAD IT IN 2 WHEEL DRIVE THE WHOLE TIME. ITS A NICE DRIVE THROUGH THE PARK ENDING ON DILLION ROAD TO THE SOUTH. IT TOOK ABOUT 3 HOURS TO DO. WE STOPED FOR LUNCH AND PICTURES. THERE ARE 2 SPOTS THAT REQUIRE YOU TO PAY ATTENTION BUT NOTHING TO GET EXCITED ABOUT. ALL IN ALL THIS WAS A NICE DRIVE. STOCK HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLE CAN DO IT WITH NO PROBLEM 4 STARS FOR FUN AND BEAUTY 1 STAR FOR DIFFICULTY HAVE FUN

Very nice drive. Getting the info from the Park Service made the drive more interseting. I checked in with the Park Sevice and they told me they did not recommend driving through the Canyon be cause it was in bad shape. They said to drive until it started to look bad. I did not find it bad at all. My SUV has a fairly high clearance and skid plates. There were a couple of rough spots but I did not scrape so I would not consider that bad. The worst part is after leaving Joshua Tree the road is washed out. I followed the tracks of people who had been through and did not have any trouble.

First outing in my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and I must agree that this is an excellent first outing for anyone new to their vehicle. I did not need low range or 4 wheel drive, but used it anyway just to be sure everything works. Longer wheelbase vehicles will need to be careful over some of the rock ledges in the washes, but certainly negotiable (my other rig is a 96 Ford Expedition). The weather is always nice here this time of year and there are many interesting geological and botanical findings along the way. I must admit that I did enjoy my satellite radio during the more boring parts of the trail. I highly recommend this trail for a great one day outing from the LA and San Diego areas. ENJOY!

Great time on an overcast day on this trail in my new, stock, FJCruiser. The park was somewhat surreal with the low clouds and endless joshua trees, very nice. The first two thirds of the trail are pretty fast, mostly smooth going with the last third in the windy slot canyon a little more challenging, but any stock high clearance vehicle should be fine. Took us a little under the estimated time to complete and we were not pushing hard.
