Under construction for years, primarily through the efforts of volunteer workers, the Lucas Canyon Trail was finally completed in 1992. Its opening inaugurated the first legal access to the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness trail system from the west. Shortly thereafter, in October 1993, virtually all of the vegetation traversed by the trail was incinerated to ash and blackened twigs when flames swept through. Chaparral regenerates rapidly, and you must look carefully to find evidence of the burn.
