Dead Horse Trail

Dead Horse Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This short but interesting hike begins at Trippet Ranch and
meanders through chaparral, sandstone, and multiple species
of ferns. On this relatively flat trip you will cross over a creek
on a rustic bridge before reaching your turnaround at the
Dead Horse parking area."

Hondo Canyon Trail starts at Deadhorse trailhead in Topanga State Park but you must leave the park and walk West to the Backbone Trail. Hondo means deep and this canyon rises ~ 2500'' in 5 miles. At the top you will see many fossils in the sandstone from ancient times and the weather can be very different from the bottom of the canyon. The fog was rolling in as we reached the top where Stunt Road and Saddle Peak Rd meet but we could see clear skies at the bottom. The 10 miles RT took about 3 1/2 hours. Watch for poison oak but otherwise the trail is in excellent shape.
