Rae Lakes

Rae Lakes Professional Review and Guide

"This fine trip circles King Spur. The scenery en route is dramatic enough to challenge the most accomplished photographer or artist as the trail ascends the glacially carved canyon of South Fork Kings River, visits the exceptionally beautiful Rae Lakes, makes a breathtaking ascent of Glen Pass, circles beneath the towering ramparts of the Videttes and Kearsarge Pinnacles, and returns down the canyon of dashing Bubbs Creek."

This is a beautiful 40+ mile loop that highlights everything the Sierras has to offer: wildflower-filled meadows, deep blue mountain lakes, crystal clear streams, high passes with stunning views in all directions. We spent 3 nights and felt fairly rushed. We also encountered a black bear that rambled alongside us for about a half mile. I would do this again in a heartbeat.

I went with my brother and his son on this hike. We started the trail along Bubbs Creek and encountered most people exiting that way. This was a better way to go since the challenge was going up Glen Pass was a bit steeper than expected but worth the effort when we hit the top and had views both north and south. The way down was not as easy going as oour map indicated but the campsites (Junction Meadow, Rae Lakes, and Upper Paradise Valley) were well worth the trip. Since the 4th of July Holiday was in the middle of the week, not many hikers were encountered until the last day. A definite must trip for the views.
