Monarch Lakes Professional Review and Guide
"The reward for this hike’s stiff climb is a pair of picturesque subalpine lakes cradled in a dramatic cirque basin beneath multicolored peaks of metamorphic rock. Not only is the destination stunningly beautiful, but also the vistas of the Mineral King area during the ascent are equally impressive. Despite the climb—2,500 feet in 3-plus miles—the trip up the Sawtooth Pass Trail is popular with backpackers and day hikers alike. The Mineral King Road is usually open by Memorial Day weekend, but the trail to Monarch Lakes is usually snowbound until early July following winters of average snowfall. Trail use is highest from mid-July through August. The weather in September can be quite enjoyable."
