Farewell Gap

Farewell Gap Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Farewell Gap Trail was a popular route into the Kern River backcountry, at least until another trail was built over Franklin Pass. Nowadays, only the initial stretch of trail to the Franklin Lakes Trail junction is well traveled. However, hikers in good physical condition searching for excellent vistas will find the 5.5-mile climb to Farewell Gap quite rewarding, where the panorama of Mineral King and Little Kern River’s upper basin create picture-postcard scenes."

"This excursion takes you to a windy gap, giving you a vista of the Mineral King Valley and a peek into the Golden Trout Wilderness. Trailhead parking is not available at the pack station. To reach the trailhead, walk back to the road fork and go right (south), toward the pack station. The trail begins just south of the corral. No water or restrooms are available at the trailhead. Please remember proper trail etiquette by stepping off the trail on the downhill side until the horses have passed." Read more
