Malibu Creek State Park MASH Trail

Malibu Creek State Park: M*A*S*H Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This no-dogs-allowed trail starts off flat and easy as it passes through shady valleys of live oaks and wildflowers, then turns rugged with boulders and brush before arriving at the now-desolate site of the old M*A*S*H TV series. Worthwhile detours include a rock pool and climbing wall and a man-made lake that fans of the 4077th might also recognize.

To get to the M*A*S*H site, continue straight on the fire road past an open grassy area dotted with newly planted trees. On weekends, this area is usually swarming with families who have come to the park to picnic, ride bikes, and splash around in the creek. This trail is often billed as an easy walk because it’s mostly flat, but it’s not for kids. The latter half of the hike isn’t well marked and requires quite a bit of scrambling around boulders and heavy brush, especially in the winter when the creek floods parts of the trail."

My hub and I loved this easy trail - it was a hot day, but there were so many beautiful oak trees and spots to stop and take in the scenery. We kept noting that the mountains in the area looked like we were in a completely different part of the country - hard to imagine LA was right over the peaks! And the way to the M*A*S*H site was very worth it. They keep it a nice site, with old photos of the episodes to put you right where they were at the time of filming! Very cool to check out. We're definitely gonna go back to check out all the other side trails in the area too!
This hike has become my favorite. I have returned several times, each time I find something new. I chose this hike for people that want to try hiking for the first time. Everything is there, stream, meadows, old oaks, a lake, big trees and the fun of visiting the "MASH" site were the series was filmed. There is a rusted jeep and ambulance to mark the spot. I looked at old clips of the show and say both of them. Continue on past this to the Malibu Lake and the ponds filled with birds and ducks. Try the Lost Cabin Trail (1 mile round trip) just to say you did. Nothing there. When returning, take the Forest Trail to Century Lake and enjoy the big trees. This hike is great for the whole family. I even came across a Chinese family that hiked to Century Lake. Not strange, however, they had a baby in a carriage, the elders where dressed like they were going out on the town. The father had a black suit and tie; the mother had a printed dress. They were wonderful. Don't forget to take your lunch and eat at the lake or MASH site picnic tables.
